Ascending Time

In Matera, Italy (one of the oldest continually inhabited places on Earth), I paused to take photos of a young couple walking up an ancient set of steps. Before they reached the top, an older couple came up from below struggling with the ascent. As they all passed through this interesting geometry framed by deep shadows, I imagined that it was one couple at different stages in their lives, and the hard lines of time and space softened.
